Peltier Effect mini fridges/hotboxes – do they really work?
I’ve seen those personal mini-fridges/hotboxes that rather than use a coolant like a traditional refridgerator, use the electronic peltier effect. Does anyone have one and do they make a good long-term refridgerator for something like keeping a bottle/carton of milk cold at your desk.
They work, but I would not use them for anything that requires refrigeration. A couple problems: first of all, lots of liquid condenses on whatever you put in, and the second problem is a lot of noise. For the peltier device to work, it has a heat sink and fan much like a computer CPU. The fan is often loud and obnoxious, I replaced mine with a nice japanese ball bearing fan and it’s much more tolerable.
So, it’s good for keeping sandwiches cold for a road trip, or keeping cans of pop, but I wouldn’t keep milk or anything that is temperature sensitive in it for long periods.
